Tandem Hang Gliding

£195
  • Towed to around 2,000 feet by microlight
  • Hang glide above the Thames valley, strapped securely to an instructor
  • Incredible views of the earth and the sky as you soar on the thermals
  • Includes full safety briefing and all equipment

Mother nature may not have given us wings, but science has given us hang gliders instead. This experience lets you fly like a bird. After a full briefing, your BHPA-qualified instructor will introduce you to the tandem glider: a rigid-winged ATOS VX, specifically designed for tandem flight and one of the best gliders in the world. You'll be shown how to get into to the harness and once secured, you and your instructor will be towed into the air behind a microlight tug. Once you're at a height of around 2,000ft the rope is released, the microlight pulls away and you're free to soar and circle lazily in the thermal currents above the beautiful Essex countryside, with incredible views of the earth and the sky. It really will take your breath away. One-day membership of the BHPA (British Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association) is also included.

Location:

Hornchurch, Essex

More information

Participant Guidelines: Minimum age is 16. Maximum weight is 15 stone, fully-clothed. You need to be reasonably fit. Anyone over 40 will need to complete a medical declaration form before taking part.
Weather: Hang gliding is weather dependent. It's crucial that you call for a weather check either by 9pm (latest) the evening before, or from 8am (earliest) on the day. If your flight is cancelled due to bad weather it will be re-booked for an alternative date.
Duration: The length of your flight depends entirely on the prevailing thermal currents (the warmer air that provides the lift). As a guide, your flight should last for between 20 and 25 minutes, but please allow up to an hour at the venue.
Numbers On Day: Your briefing might be shared; your flight will be held on a one-to-one basis with the instructor.
Spectators: Spectators are welcome to watch you take off and land, dont let them forget to bring a camera or pair of binoculars. They can relax in the cafe and viewing area on the airfield. Sorry, dogs are not permitted at airfields.
Dress Code: Wear closed in flat-soled shoes and bring a jumper with you in case it's cold at higher altitudes. Bring gloves in winter and sunblock and a hat in summer. Sunglasses are recommended all year round. All other equipment will be provided on the day.
Availability: Weekend and some weekday dates every other week throughout the main flying season (May to October). Please note that weekends are particularly busy and we recommend booking several weeks in advance.
Other Info: You'll be asked to sign a form to confirm that you are fit, have not drunk alcohol and agree to comply with all operational rules and instructions.
