Half Day Yacht Racing

  • Close yacht racing in Sigma 8 metre keelboats for manoeuvrability
  • A thrilling yacht race round a floating race track
  • Head to a local bar to drink rum and sing shanties (if you must...)
  • Suitable for non-sailors, safety briefing and all equipment included

Get your competitive spirit going with close yacht racing - combining the freedom of the open water with the thrill of racing and the satisfaction of hands-on involvement. You'll be on board a modern Sigma 8 metre high-performance manoeuverable keelboat. First you'll meet your instructor and the crew, before heading to the yachts for a safety briefing. Training includes hoisting sails, helming, practising the most efficient methods of manoeuvring the yacht and learning how to keelhaul landlubbers (or maybe not). Then you'll be briefed on the rules of the race, which takes place on a floating 'race track'. And it's all hands on deck - you'll participate fully in crewing the yacht during the race, putting into action everything that you've learned and pitting you against the competition and the elements. Afterwards you'll retire to the clubhouse for results, and you're welcome to go for a well earned drink with the instructor and crew in one of the local bars afterwards.

Participant Guidelines: Minimum age is 16 accompanied by another voucher holding adult and 18 unaccompanied. Maximum weight is 16 stone. You don't need any previous sailing experience, but you need to be reasonably fit - this is active stuff! Non-swimmers are welcome.
Weather: Sailing is a weather dependent activity. It's vital that you call the venue the day before your booking, to confirm conditions and that the experience is going ahead (as there are conditions under which the experience may have to be postponed).
Duration: Your experience runs for approximately three hours. The actual race normally lasts around 20 minutes, depending on conditions. Please arrive in good time (ideally few minutes in advance).
Numbers On Day: Up to three boats will race, with a maximum of five people plus an instructor aboard each boat.
Spectators: Spectators are welcome to come down to the pontoon and wave you off. The race can be viewed from the breakwater or the beach.
Dress Code: You must wear flat, soft and light-soled, non-marking shoes, eg deck shoes or trainers or you wont be permitted aboard. Wear lots of layers, it can get cold out at sea. Bring extra clothes and sun protection. Life-jackets and sailing gear is provided.
Availability: Selected Saturday and Sunday dates from April to September. We recommend early booking for this popular experience.
